Saving Money On Your Grocery Shopping

The cost of groceries are rising all the time, so what can you do to save on your weekly shop? One of the most fundamental things is to make a list, and stick to it! Sit down and work out what you need for each and every meal, for each and every day of the week. From breakfast to supper and everything your family eats in between those times. Make sure you include all snacks and beverages as well. Once you've worked all that out, don't buy anything that isn't on your list. Even a few packs of chips that you don't really need will add up quickly.

Make sure you check your local papers and magazines for coupons that you can cut out and keep, and make sure they're in your purse or wallet before you leave home to do the shopping! For grocery basics, many stores compete on the prices of a few items to drag you in and hope you'll do your whole shop there. Don't be tempted because chances are, they've put up other prices to balance out the reductions. Shopping in more than one store is the best way to make sure you get the bargains from each store.

Watch out for your local store's double coupon days and always have your frequent shopper card with you. Try to buy items that are offering extra products free or 'buy one, get one free' offers - as long as the item was on your list in the first place. Don't be persuaded to buy something just because it's on offer. Only take advantage of offers when they are something you'd intended to purchase in the first place.

Another tip is to make sure you aren't hungry when you go to do your shopping. There's nothing more tempting than the great smells that come wafting your way from the in-store deli or bakery and you'll probably find yourself buying something you can eat on the drive home. Chances are, that it will be something expensive because it's a convenience food.

One more great money saver is trying generic brands. Many companies have now recognized that consumers want good quality store-brand goods that are comparable with branded goods. So even if the packaging isn't attractive, it doesn't mean that the product won't be good. Give it a try! You could save up to 40% or more of your annual grocery bill by buying generic brands. Finally, when you're at the checkout, don't be tempted by the racks of candies and offers that you'll see - and be tempted to buy - while you're getting in line for check-out. For this same reason, try to avoid taking your kids with you on shopping trips. While you might be determined to stick to your list, kids are often difficult to refuse when they see a treat or toy they really want. It can be hard to say no in a line full of people once the 'I want' starts.

Good luck and happy shopping!
