Desperate Times, Desperate Measures - Part 2

Continued from our recent article entitled Desperate Times, Desperate Measures, here are some more ways to save - and make - yourself some money.

If you have a spare room in your home, consider renting it out. Or if, for example, your kids each have a room, get them to share one large room to free up space for a renter. You may not like the idea of having a stranger in your home, but if you initially offer a three month lease, you don't have to re-let the room if it doesn't work. The extra income from a renter could make a huge difference to your finances, but of course, be very careful to thoroughly interview anyone you let through your door.

In our last article, we mentioned having a yard sale, but if that doesn't appeal to you, how about using eBay or a similar auction site to get rid of the things you don't need or want? The most obscure things sell on auction sites, so whether it's a dress you haven't worn for twenty years or an ugly cookie jar that's sat on top of your kitchen cabinets forever, list them and you may be pleasantly surprised at how much money you can make. Depending on what it is, you can also list it on Craigslist for free and ship it out or meet in person. Just be as careful as possible when dealing with these types of transactions.

When you need to buy new clothes, go to thrift shops or yard sales or check out eBay or Craigslist; again, you can pick up some real bargains and cheap doesn't have to mean nasty. There are millions of us who throw away next to new clothing simply because it's the wrong size or we don't like it once we get it home.

If there's something you could do in your spare time to make some cash, print off a few flyers at home and let people know you're available. Most of us can mow a lawn or clean windows or even clean other people's houses. It's not much fun to have to do other people's dirty jobs but if it makes some extra money, it might be worth considering. Get your kids in on it too; there's no reason why they couldn't earn their own pocket money washing cars (for instance), as long as there's an adult with them at all times to keep them safe.

Finally, look for ways you can make money online. There are thousands of sites offering payment in return for filling out questionnaires or simply visiting other sites. It's usually very low pay but it mounts up in time, and if you're doing nothing else more profitable, what could it hurt?
